What is NSO?

NSO refers to the National Sports Organisation.

At IIT Madras, all undergraduate students are required to participate in one of the following programmes during their first year: National Sports Organisation (NSO), National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC) or National Cultural Activities (NCA). These programmes are designed to encourage the holistic development of students beyond academics.

Through NSO, students receive structured training and coaching in a sport of their choice as part of the institute curriculum. Students are expected to regularly attend practice sessions across two semesters, and successful completion of the programme is a mandatory requirement for the completion of the degree.

NSO at IIT Madras provides students with an opportunity to explore sports, improve fitness, develop discipline and teamwork, and engage with the institute’s vibrant sporting culture. Training sessions are conducted under experienced coaches using the institute’s extensive sports facilities.

Some of the sports and activities offered under NSO at IIT Madras include:

For many students, NSO serves as an introduction to the active hostel and inter-IIT sports culture at IIT Madras, often encouraging them to continue participating in sports throughout their college life.
