Tell me about all the hostels at IITM

IIT Madras is a fully residential institute that offers hostel accommodation to students who opt for campus stay. The institute’s hostels are named after major Indian rivers and together form an integral part of campus life and culture. There are 15 hostels for male students and 5 hostels for female students.

First-year undergraduate students are generally allotted shared accommodation, while senior undergraduate and postgraduate students may receive single, double or triple occupancy rooms depending on hostel availability and programme requirements.

Below are some of the major hostels at IIT Madras:

Mandakini A & B

Mandakini serves as one of the primary hostels for first-year male undergraduate students. Known for its height, modern infrastructure and spacious rooms, Mandakini consists entirely of shared accommodation. The hostel includes amenities such as laundry rooms, badminton courts, reading rooms, common rooms and recreational spaces. Its relatively recent construction and location make it one of the most well-known hostels on campus.

Cauvery

Cauvery Hostel is considered as the sophomore hostel, once being the freshie hostel before Mandakini’s inauguration, and like Mandakini is well known for its comfort and amenities. Inside the hostel are multiple playgrounds, mini football fields, a batting cage, and along with it, multiple laundry rooms, common rooms, etc. While Mandakini stands out because of its architectural significance, Cauvery is where every student gets exposed to the vibes of hostel life.

Brahmaputra

Brahmaputra is another sophomore hostel known for its close-knit student community and strong hostel spirit. Located behind Tapti Hostel, Brahmaputra has traditionally been appreciated for its quieter surroundings and camaraderie among residents. Renovation and infrastructure improvements have further modernised the hostel in recent years.

Alaknanda

Located close to the Taramani Gate, Alaknanda is known for its accessibility and comfortable living environment. Like most hostels at IIT Madras, it includes common rooms, recreational areas and essential residential facilities.

Ganga

Located just a few metres away from Mandakini, Ganga is one of the cleanest and most comfortable hostels to reside in. On account of its recent renovation, Ganga residents find themselves with updated washroom facilities, more amenities, and fewer monkeys, making the hostel an old gem repolished.

Jamuna

Jamuna, located parallel to the Ganga Hostel, is a sharer of the same fate. Recently renovated, Jamuna is a very clean hostel, with several amenities, but unlike Ganga, is also filled with monkeys around the building.

Godavari

Another recently renovated hostel, Godavari shares all the characteristics previously mentioned. But unlike the other hostels, Godavari is privileged in being located near the Himalaya Mess and Food Court, increasing its desirability.

Krishna

Krishna Hostel is situated close to Nilgiri Mess and is known for its greenery, gardens and peaceful surroundings. Its location and atmosphere make it one of the more relaxed residential spaces on campus.

Narmada

Narmada Hostel is renowned for its passionate cultural representation in inter-hostel events. It might not have been renovated as of yet, and might not contain the same amount of amenities but it is located just opposite to the Rotterman Food Truck, which provides its residents with cheap food options far late at night.

Saraswati

Saraswati Hostel is not just renovated, or clean, or filled with amenities, but is also located in the prime spot opposite to Quark (consists of Zaitoon and a hangout spot) facing the Sangam grounds. Students can travel from their rooms at Saras to grab a bite, watch part of a football game and then travel to Taramani Gate, and be done within a span of five minutes.

Tapti

Tapti Hostel, while housing the same amenities and facilities, sets itself apart with two unique characteristics - i) Air Conditioned Common Room & ii) Cycle Repair Shop. Having these in such close proximity allows Tapti residents to enjoy their stay during the hot days of summer when it's impossible to stay outside, and during the rainy seasons when it's impossible to travel to repair your cycle. Tapti also houses its own gymnasium.

Tamiraparani, Sindhu, Pampa and Mahanadhi

These hostels are commonly referred to as the “Tower Hostels” and primarily accommodate postgraduate students and research scholars. Most rooms are single occupancy, allowing residents greater privacy and study space.

Swarnamukhi

Swarnamukhi serves as a major hostel for first-year female undergraduate students. Like Mandakini, it is relatively new and is known for its modern amenities, cleanliness and proximity to important campus locations such as the Central Library, CLT and student hangout areas.

Sharavati

Sharavati is another prominent women’s hostel known for its active participation in inter-hostel cultural and sports events. Located close to Usha Café and Vindhya Mess, it combines accessibility with a vibrant hostel culture.

Tunga

Tunga is one of the tower hostels at IIT Madras that primarily houses postgraduate students and research scholars. Located near Cauvery and Nilgiri Mess, it mainly consists of single rooms and offers a quieter residential environment.

Bhadra

Located close to Tunga, Bhadra primarily houses senior undergraduate students. The hostel is known for its active hostel culture, good connectivity to nearby messes and vibrant student life.

Sabarmati

Housing specifically female graduate students and researchers, Sabarmati is located in close proximity to the Open Air Theatre, and USHA Cafe, providing its residents with both sources of sustenance and entertainment.

Hostel Facilities

Hostel rooms are generally equipped with essential furniture including a table, chair, shelf, bed frame and storage cupboard. Most rooms also include ceiling fans, lighting and high-speed LAN connectivity. Students are expected to arrange personal items such as mattresses and LAN cables themselves.

Common restrooms are available on each floor. A cluster of 7-8 rooms shares washing machines, both automatic and semi-automatic. Students are responsible for their own laundry and room maintenance. While cleaning staff maintain common areas, including restrooms, corridors, and floors, students must clean their own rooms. Hostel management is available to assist with pre-existing issues with dirt or paint. Most hostels also feature 24/7 vending machines. For any concerns, students can contact the hostel manager, who is committed to ensuring prompt resolution.
