NIRF
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) forms the representation of the quality of educational institutes in the nation on an annual basis based on five broad parameters, constituted by several sub-parameters. The consolidated scores and the overall ranking are borne out of carefully curated metrics for each of the parameters that follow.
The 10th edition of the results was announced on 4 September 2025 by the Ministry of Education.
Here are the overall NIRF Rank of IITs across India in 2023:
Rank City Score 1 Madras 87.31 3 Bombay 81.62 4 Delhi 80.67 5 Kanpur 77.25 6 Kharagpur 73.99 7 Roorkee 71.73 11 Guwahati 67.67
IIT Madras has retained Rank 1 in the Overall category for the seventh consecutive year. Notably, IISc Bangalore has risen to Rank 2 overall (85.00), pushing IIT Bombay to Rank 3. AIIMS New Delhi holds Rank 8, and JNU Rank 9 — reflecting the truly cross-domain nature of the overall ranking. Among IITs specifically, the order from 2023 is broadly maintained, with Guwahati now at Rank 11 (from Rank 7 in 2023) as several non-IIT institutions have risen through the field.
There are 5 broad parameters, further divided into specific sub-parameters that NIRF uses, each with a maximum score of 100 and separate weightage:
Graduation Outcomes (GO)
Perception (PR)
NIRF 2025 scores of the top IITs in each parameter are as follows:
Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR)
Institution Score Madras 90.58 Kanpur 86.36 Bombay 83.79 Delhi 80.52 Kharagpur 77.73 Roorkee 73.06 Guwahati 68.27
IIT Madras leads all IITs in TLR with a score of 90.58, reflecting continued investment in faculty, infrastructure, and teaching quality. IIT Kanpur holds a notably strong second place in this parameter, ahead of IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi.
Research and Professional Practice (RP)
Institution Score Madras 88.02 Delhi 86.67.23 Bombay 83.05 Kanpur 72.12 Roorkee 72.05 Kharagpur 71.21 Guwahati 67.16
IIT Madras continues to lead in research output, topping all IITs in RPC. This reflects the institute's sustained push in patents, publications, and industry-linked research — filing 417 patents in 2024-25 alone.
Graduation Outcomes (GO)
Institution Score Madras 87.01 Bombay 86.04 Roorkee 82.90 Guwahati 82.12 Kanpur 82.01 Kharagpur 81.52 Delhi 74.71
IIT Madras leads in GO, affirming that it continues to open the widest range of avenues — placements, higher education, and entrepreneurship — for its graduates. IIT Delhi's relatively lower GO score is notable given its strong overall standing, reflecting the multi-parameter nature of the overall score.
Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)
Institution Score Roorkee 64.95 Delhi 63.54 Madras 63.34 Guwahati 62.73 Kharagpur 60.63 Kanpur 60.38 Bombay 60.13
IIT Madras ranks 3rd among IITs in OI, behind IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi. OI remains an area where all IITs cluster closely, and it is the one parameter where the gap between institutions is narrowest. IIT Madras's Sports Excellence Admission (introduced in 2024) and the new Fine Arts and Cultural Excellence (FACE) programme are steps aimed at broadening this score in future editions.
Perception (PR)
For details on what Perception is, its sub-parameters, and the PR Scores of the IITs from 2022, see here.
Institution Score Madras 100.00 Delhi 92.23 Bombay 83.35 Kanpur 72.56 Kharagpur 69.51 Roorkee 51.24 Guwahati 43.52
IIT Madras scores a perfect 100 in Perception in 2025 — reflecting unmatched public, academic, and industry trust. The gap between IITM and the next-ranked IIT (IIT Delhi at 92.23) in this parameter is the widest across any single parameter among the top institutions.
IIT Madras leads or is competitive across all five parameters, with a commanding lead in Perception and Research. The 2025 results mark the 10th consecutive year of #1 in Engineering and the 7th in the Overall category — a record without precedent in Indian higher education.
