The 4-year BS in Medical Sciences and Engineering at IIT Madras is an innovative interdisciplinary program designed to train future “engineering-doctors”. It bridges medicine and technology and some of its core focus is teaching you about healthcare delivery, AI in medicine, medical device development, and drug discovery. Since the degree is not typically medical-based, you will not be learning an equivalent-MBBS degree and cannot practice as doctors.
Admissions & Eligibility Entrance Exam:
Admissions are based on the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT).
Class 12th Requirements include mandatory Mathematics, along with at least two of the following: Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Biochemistry.
Minimum aggregate is 60% (55% for SC/ST/PwD).
The Application Process requires registering on both the IISER Admissions Portal and the IIT Madras Admissions Portal.
In a course like this, you will get to study a mix of engineering fundamentals (biomechanics, fluid mechanics, and medical image analysis) and physiological sciences (quantitative human physiology, anatomy, and clinical neurosciences).
You will also get a hands-on practical experience since the program includes embedded internships in hospitals to connect theoretical concepts with practical medical settings. The core aim of this degree is to prepare students for upcoming careers in medical device engineering, pharmaceutical R&D, clinical engineering, healthcare IT, and advanced scientific research (such as pursuing a PhD).
Emphasis on industry placements is also given for students to make headway in medical technology firms like Pfizer or Biocon, diagnostic centres, hospital tech teams, and emerging AI healthcare startups like HealthifyMe.
