What is the difference between BTech Biotechnology and BSc Biotechnology? Which field can my son pursue after BTech Biotech?
IIT Madras offers degree programmes in Biological Engineering (B.Tech) and Biological Sciences (B.S), but not any BSc programs. A BSc in Biotechnology will be a three-year Bachelor of Science degree, while a B.Tech is a more application-based four-year program. In Biological Engineering, aside from core theory and practical courses, a basket of elective courses will be offered in bioprocess engineering, biomedical engineering and computational biology for specialisation. The programme is designed to allow the students sufficient time and courses to familiarise themselves with different areas of the biology-engineering interface before embarking on a specialisation. In Biological Sciences, apart from the fundamental courses in biological sciences, the curriculum will emphasise other areas – chemical biology and computational biology. In addition to a few core theory and laboratory courses, a basket of elective courses will be offered in each of these areas. Both programmes impart extensive research-based learning and train students to undertake academic research in frontier areas in world-class universities. They also equip students with skills to be employed in R&D laboratories of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in India and abroad.
